About me

I am a freelance writer with many published pieces of work, including books, newspaper and magazine articles, training programmes, information booklets and much more. I specialise in writing about social issues affecting children and young people.

I have co-written BAAF’s course Preparing to Adopt, a widely-used preparation course for prospective adopters.

I also provide training events and workshops for social workers, adoptive parents, foster carers and others about the implications of social networking in adoption and foster care. I deliver these workshops at the request of local authority and voluntary adoption agencies, adoption consortia and other organisations, such as the North Wales Adoption Service, After Adoption, Coram and PACT.
I have written widely about the impact of social networking on adoption and fostering and the implications for young people and their families and carers. My books on this subject were published by BAAF Adoption and Fostering. Facing up to Facebook: A Survival Guide for Adoptive Families was voted one of the top 10 parenting books of 2011 by The Independent.

In 2013 I wrote (with Kate Cairns and Chris Stanway): Ten Top Tips: Supporting education, which looks at some of the positive steps that workers and carers can take to support looked-after children in school. I’ve also facilitated workshops on this subject for Cambridge University’s Realise project.

My feature articles have appeared in The Guardian, The Times, The Independent, Children and Young People Now, The Times Educational Supplement, Nursing Times, Nursing Standard, GP, Community Care, Real Business and Mother & Baby magazine, among others.
